Aldevis

Aldevis Tibaldi is a London-based Italian saxophonist, composer, and arranger, performing across the full saxophone family, clarinets, and flute. With four warmly-received albums as a leader, he blends the rich traditions of jazz with a fresh, nuanced voice that travels across borders. From his mixed roots and cross-continental background, Tibaldi speaks the universal language of jazz in multiple accents, be it in intimate trio settings or vibrant big-band arrangements.

Born and classically trained in Trieste, at the North-Eastern Italian border, Tibaldi is familiar with intersections, borrowings, mixing, and cultural crossovers. His discovery of jazz, in the mid-1980s, was practically inevitable. He has since collaborated with many international artists from a variety of genres, not always identifiable as jazz, performing in clubs and festivals across Europe. His albums— from the genre-spanning Special Jazz Blend to the Ellington tribute Tell Duke—showcase a bold, sparky, yet refined approach to composition and improvisation.

Tibaldi’s performances are alive with energy, lyricism, and a sense of discovery, inviting audiences to experience jazz that is both rooted in the tradition of mixing traditions, and unmistakably his own.

Projects: special blends of jazz musicians

Aldevis Tibaldi Sax

Tibaldi’s musical versatility spans from intimate chamber settings to expansive big-band arrangements, where he has appeared as a featured guest soloist. In trios and quartets, his most authentic and compelling artistic expression flourishes, as he brings together artists from different traditions in projects like the acclaimed Tell Duke, his heartfelt tribute to Duke Ellington.
Smaller ensembles allow Tibaldi’s artistic leadership to orchestrate a rich tapestry of cross-cultural musical dialogue. Tibaldi demonstrates remarkable skill in curating musical partnerships that honour jazz tradition and his own eclecticism.

In the making: Electroacoustic Miles (2026)

Coming out in 2026, Electroacoustic Miles aims at celebrating Miles Davis's centenary with a tribute to his musical creativity.
The project, created with Amy Baldwin and Gabriel Keen, will take the audience on a journey of reinterpretation of the jazz legend's legacy, exploring the distinctive elements of Miles's music —modal explorations, electric innovations, fusion experiments— through contemporary improvisation in a strictly acoustic context. Gems from Miles's electric period are transformed with unexpected harmonic shifts and kinetic energy.
The London-based ensemble honours the groundbreaking musical innovations of the jazz icon by tapping into his restless research for new sonic territories.

This very welcome CD is a sincere and heartfelt but in no way slavish tribute to the musical world of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. Aldevis Tibaldi [...] leads a cracking quartet that could have come straight from one of the better U.S. labels of the 1960s.
